Queen Quilt

Queen is the volume size in every bedding category, which is exactly why it is the size manufacturers shave. Cut a queen quilt at 86 inches instead of 92 and you save fabric on every unit; the shopper only finds out when it is on the bed and the drop stops halfway down the mattress.

This one measures 92 × 96 inches. On a 60-inch queen mattress that is 16 inches of drop each side — past the bottom of a 14-inch mattress, with room for a topper — and 96 inches of length to cover the foot and still fold back at the head.

Three cotton layers throughout: a 200 thread count combed long-staple cotton face, 200 gsm cotton batting, cotton backing, certified to OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100. Quilted at a 1.5 in. diamond, eight stitches to the inch, so the batting cannot migrate in the wash. Half-inch double-fold bias binding on all four edges.

Three pieces: the quilt and two standard shams at 20 × 26 in., flanged and rear-closing. Garment-washed before shipping, so it arrives with the softened hand rather than the board-stiff finish quilts usually turn up with.

This is the piece that makes a bed work across the year without buying twice. On its own from roughly May to September; layered under a duvet or a wool blanket when the room drops below about 16 °C. That dual use is the whole argument for a quilt over a comforter, and it is why the 200 gsm batting is specified rather than something heavier.

The shams are worth a line of their own, because they are where quilt sets are usually cheapened. These are cut with a two-inch flange and a rear envelope closure rather than a zip. A flange holds a sham upright against a headboard; a zipped sham with no flange slumps as soon as the pillow settles, which is why so many made beds look deflated by the second morning.
