Cotton Quilt

Here is the arithmetic almost no king quilt survives. A king mattress is 76 inches wide. A quilt sold as king that measures 90 inches across leaves seven inches of drop per side — which, on a modern 14-inch mattress, does not reach the bottom of the mattress, never mind past it. The quilt sits on top of the bed like a runner, the mattress edge shows all the way round, and the bed never looks made.This one is cut 108 × 96 inches. Subtract the 76-inch mattress and you have 32 inches of width to spend, 16 to a side: enough to clear a 14-inch mattress plus a three-inch topper and still hang below the line. The 96-inch length covers the foot and leaves enough at the head to fold back over pillows.Construction is the house standard: a 100% combed long-staple cotton face at 200 thread count over 200 gsm cotton batting, quilted in a 1.5 in. diamond at eight stitches to the inch, bound in half-inch double-fold bias binding. Garment-washed, under 3% residual shrinkage.Supplied as three pieces — the quilt and two king shams at 20 × 36 in. Shams are cut with a flanged edge and a rear envelope closure, so they hold their shape standing against a headboard rather than sagging the way a zipped sham does.One practical note specific to this size. A finished king quilt weighs 3.1 kg dry, and wet it is considerably more. It needs a machine of 8 kg capacity or larger; a standard 6 kg domestic drum will not agitate it properly and the quilt comes out with detergent still in it. Wash cold, tumble low, or take it to a laundromat once a season.A California king is four inches longer and four narrower — a different cut, listed separately.
