Why most reversible quilts have a real side and a fake side

Reversible is the most abused word in bedding. In practice it usually means a printed face and a plain backing in thinner, cheaper cloth — technically two sides, but only one you would ever have showing. Turn most reversible quilts over and the difference in hand is obvious in a second.

Why yarn-dyed matters more here than on a single-sided piece

Yarn-dyeing matters more here than on a single-sided piece. A printed reverse fades at a different rate to a printed front, so within a couple of seasons a reversible quilt stops matching itself. Yarn-dyed cloth ages evenly on both faces, which is the only way the piece stays genuinely reversible after two years of washing.

What it buys you is a bedroom you can restyle without buying anything. Sable side up reads warm and closes a room down for winter; Bone side up opens it out for summer. In a guest room it means one quilt covers two very different-looking beds depending on what the sheets underneath are doing.

How to care for your reversible quilt

• Cold wash, gentle cycle, tumble low
• Wash inside a large drum on its own for the first cycle — a dark and a light face in the same piece want one settling wash before they meet the rest of the laundry
• Skip fabric softener — coats cotton batting
• Air dry if possible; a tumble dryer is not the friend of a wide-diamond quilting pattern

Is a reversible quilt really the same on both sides?

Ours is. Same cloth, same thread count, both yarn-dyed. Most reversible quilts have a face and a backing in thinner cloth — you’d only use one side.

Does a reversible quilt fade unevenly?

Only printed ones do. Ours is yarn-dyed on both faces, which is the only way both sides age at the same rate.

Can I sleep under a reversible quilt on its own?

Yes in summer — 200 gsm batting is a light-to-medium fill. Add a blanket in winter or pair with a duvet.

Do reversible quilts come with matching shams?

Ours do, in Full/Queen/King sizes — two shams, reversible to match the quilt (Sable one side, Bone the other).
