Why a standard 50 × 60 quilted throw is the wrong size

The standard throw size is a compromise nobody asked for. At around 50 × 60 inches it covers a seated adult to about the knee, which is precisely where a throw stops being useful. Add ten inches of length and the same object works: over the legs on a sofa, folded across the foot of a bed, around the shoulders in a cold room.

Why construction matters most on a throw

That construction is the difference between a throw that lives on the sofa for a decade and one that is a bobbled rag by the second winter. A throw takes more abrasion than anything else in a house — it is sat on, dragged, slept under, washed constantly — and the things that fail first are loose quilting and a folded-over hem. Neither is here.
