The classic kitchen window treatment is three pieces: a valance across the top and a pair of tier curtains covering the lower half, with a band of clear glass between them. It is the arrangement that gives you daylight, privacy at eye level and a finished window all at once, and it has been the standard in kitchens for a century because nothing else does all three.

Why a kitchen curtain set beats assembling one

The reason to buy it as a set rather than assembling it is dye lot. Yarn-dyed cotton is coloured on the cone before weaving, and every dye lot lands fractionally differently — not enough to notice in a shop, very much enough to notice on one window where three pieces of the same colour hang inches apart. A valance from one batch above tiers from another reads as a mistake from the doorway and cannot be fixed afterwards.

Every set here is cut from a single bolt on a single day. The valance and both tiers come from adjacent metres of the same cloth, so the colour, the hand and — on gingham and stripe — the register of the pattern all match exactly.

The proportion note: one-third clear glass between the pieces

Proportion note, because this is where a three-piece window goes wrong. The band of clear glass between the valance hem and the top of the tiers should be roughly a third of the window height. Less and the window looks crowded; more and the two elements stop reading as one treatment. Measure your window and choose the tier drop to leave that gap rather than defaulting to 24 in.

Construction and dye rating

100% combed cotton at 200 gsm, yarn-dyed to ISO 105-C06 grade 4–5, washable at 60 °C — wash all three pieces together, always, so they age at the same rate.
