Kitchen curtains in 100% combed cotton at 200 gsm, yarn-dyed with fiber-reactive dyes tested colorfast grade 4–5, 60 °C hot-wash rated indefinitely without losing color or hand. Our kitchen curtains are cut sill-length or mid-drop so the cloth stays out of the oil plume, and we state the 900 mm hob-clearance safety rule plainly. Why kitchen curtains yellow at the leading edge Every time you fry something, a fine aerosol of cooking oil leaves the pan and lands on every surface in the room. On a worktop you wipe it off. On a curtain it soaks into the fiber, and then it oxidises — polymerises, technically — into a sticky, yellow, faintly rancid film that no ordinary wash removes and that gets tackier every month. It is why kitchen curtains go yellow at the leading edge while the rest of the panel looks new, and why a five-year-old kitchen curtain smells faintly of chip fat. Two defenses, both specification — not marketing There are only two defenses and both are specification, not marketing. First, a fiber and construction that tolerates a genuinely hot wash: 100% combed cotton at 200 gsm, yarn-dyed with fiber-reactive dyes tested colorfast grade 4–5, washable at 60 °C indefinitely without losing color or hand. Sixty degrees with a normal detergent lifts fresh oil. Forty does not, and a polyester will not survive sixty. Short drop keeps the cloth out of the plume Second, a short drop. These are cut sill-length rather than floor-length, which is not a style choice — a floor-length curtain in a kitchen sits in the airflow between the hob and the extractor for its whole life and collects several times the deposit. Sill-length gets the cloth out of the plume. Kitchen curtain hob clearance — the safety point stated once The safety point, stated once and plainly. Fabric near an ignition source is a fire risk and this is the room with the ignition source. Keep any curtain a minimum of 900 mm horizontally from a hob, and never fit one on a window directly above or immediately beside a gas ring where a draft can lift it. If your only kitchen window is above the hob, a curtain is the wrong product; a blind mounted flush inside the reveal is the right one. We would rather lose the sale. Wash at 60 °C, tumble low, and do it twice a year rather than when it looks dirty — by the time an oil film is visible it has already set. Aerosolised cooking oil polymerises into a sticky yellow film. Only a 60 °C wash lifts it, and only 100% cotton survives that temperature indefinitely. How far should kitchen curtains be from a hob? Minimum 900 mm horizontally. Never directly above or immediately beside a gas ring. If the window is above the hob, use a blind not a curtain. Can I use polyester kitchen curtains? Only if you never intend to hot-wash them — polyester pills under 60 °C. Cotton is the only fiber that survives the wash temperature that lifts kitchen oil. How often should I wash kitchen curtains? Twice a year on a schedule, not when they look dirty — by the time an oil film is visible it has already set into the fiber.
