Our flannel pillowcases are real cotton flannel (not polyester “flannel-effect” fleece), so they breathe rather than trap heat, and they get softer with washing rather than pilling.

Why real cotton flannel breathes and polyester fleece traps heat

Cotton flannel is what winter bedding was for a century — a woven cotton with a brushed nap that holds still air against the skin, giving you insulation without the sweatiness of a synthetic. Polyester “flannel-effect” fleece looks similar in a photograph and behaves like clingfilm on the skin, trapping moisture and reading damp by morning. The two do not perform the same job.

Flannel is for autumn, winter and early spring. In summer the same nap that keeps you warm in December feels heavy and slightly clammy by 3 a.m. — swap onto cotton percale for the warm months and back to flannel when the heating goes on.

How to care for your flannel pillowcases

• Machine wash warm on a normal cycle
• Tumble low — high heat sets the nap flat over time
• Skip fabric softener — coats the brushed nap and flattens it faster
• Wash separately for the first cycle (the nap sheds slightly on wash one)

Are flannel pillowcases warmer than cotton percale?

Meaningfully so — the brushed nap traps still air against the skin. Right for winter, too warm for summer.

Do flannel pillowcases pill?

Real cotton flannel with a proper double-brush doesn’t pill appreciably. Polyester “flannel” versions pill within a season.

Can I hot-wash flannel pillowcases?

Warm wash only. Hot wash sets the nap flat over cycles and shortens the life of the brushed finish.

What size flannel pillowcase for a queen bed?

Queen 20 × 30 in. Standard 20 × 26 works if your pillow is a standard.
