Why toddler pillowcases need a stricter certification than adult ones

A pillowcase touches a small child’s face for ten to twelve hours a night, and toddlers put their fingers in their mouths after touching everything else. The fabric standard that applies to adult pillowcases (OEKO-TEX Class II) is not strict enough for that scenario. Class I is the certification for baby articles — tested against a longer list of substances, at stricter limits — and it is what a toddler pillowcase should carry.

Toddler pillows are 12 × 16 in. or 13 × 18 in. Adult standard pillowcases (20 × 26 in.) are too large — the pillowcase bunches, the pillow moves inside it during sleep, and the corners flap. Our toddler pillowcase is cut 14 × 19 in., which fits the standard toddler pillow snugly and stays put through a full night.

Why undyed neutrals rather than prints on a toddler pillowcase

Undyed and low-dye tones are what a paediatric dermatologist would specify for anything against a young child’s face — fewer possible irritants, and the fabric can be hot-washed and oxygen-bleached without ruining the colour. Prints and characters date fast, need cool washing, and are usually printed with pigments that OEKO-TEX Class I does not permit.

How to care for your toddler pillowcase

• Machine wash at up to 60 °C — the temperature that clears dribble, milk and fluids properly
• Tumble medium or hang
• Skip fabric softener — coats fibre and can irritate sensitive skin
• Use fragrance-free detergent — the same rule as newborn clothes
• Buy at least two — toddlers are messy
