What a family cotton shower curtain has to survive

In a bathroom used by one adult, the outer curtain is mostly decorative. In a bathroom used by a family it is a working textile: splashed constantly, grabbed with wet hands, leaned on, used to dry a face by at least one member of the household, and occasionally climbed. What it needs is not elegance. It needs to survive a hot wash on a weekly basis for ten years.

Cotton is the fibre that does that, for the same reason it is the right choice in a kitchen: it is the only common natural fibre that tolerates 60 °C indefinitely. And 60 °C matters here specifically, because it is the temperature at which soap film and body oil — the food source that bathroom mildew actually grows on — release from cloth. Wash at 40 and you are rearranging the deposit; wash at 60 and you remove it.

This is 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton at 220 gsm in a close plain weave, preshrunk to under 2% so a 72 in. drop stays a 72 in. drop. Yarn-dyed with fibre-reactive dyes to ISO 105-C06 grade 4–5 — piece-dyed cotton in repeated hot washing gives up colour to everything else in the drum, which is how a white bath towel becomes a pale grey one.

Why choose a cotton shower curtain over linen

The practical argument for cotton over linen here is simply cost and tolerance. It costs meaningfully less, it can be washed with the towels rather than as its own load, and if a child pulls it down and tears a grommet out it is not a disaster. In a main bathroom that sees hard use, that is the right set of trade-offs.

The trade against linen

The trade against linen is drying time — cotton stays damp appreciably longer, so a cotton curtain in a bathroom with no window and a weak extractor is more likely to go musty between uses. If that describes your bathroom, take the linen or the waffle instead.
