Why a 55/45 cotton linen blend is a compromise worth making A blend is a compromise and it is worth being exact about which properties you are trading. Cotton fiber is short, round and elastic; linen is long, irregular and stiff. Spun together at 55% linen to 45% cotton, the cotton’s elasticity lets the yarn recover from a fold that pure linen would hold indefinitely, while the linen keeps enough of its irregularity that the cloth still reads as textured rather than flat. What that means at a real window In practice: pull a fold across a pure linen panel and it stays until you wash it. Do the same here and it relaxes out over an afternoon. That single behavior is why this is the cloth we put in rented flats, family living rooms, and any window where the curtain is drawn and shoved back twice a day by someone not thinking about it. What you give up on cotton linen curtains vs pure linen What you give up is the deep, slightly architectural fold that heavier pure linen makes, and a degree of the light effect — the cotton fills the ground slightly so less low sun comes through the weave.
