What faux linen actually is

Faux linen contains no flax. It is polyester, spun with an intentionally irregular slub yarn and woven loosely so that the surface breaks up light the way linen does. Calling it faux linen is accurate; calling it linen, as a great deal of the market does, is not. We would rather you knew before the parcel arrives than after.

Where polyester genuinely wins on curtains

So the useful question is what polyester does better, because on several counts it genuinely does. It does not shrink, at all — a 96 in. panel is 96 in. after ten washes, which matters if your measurement is tight. It is dimensionally stable in humidity, so it does not lengthen in a damp room and shorten in a dry one the way natural fiber does. It is far more colorfast in strong sun. It costs a fraction. And it can be woven at 118 in. wide, which means a very tall window can be railroaded with no horizontal seam.

Where polyester loses on curtains

What it cannot do is age. Linen improves for a decade; polyester is at its best on day one and slowly pills, flattens and loses its hand. It also holds static, so it clings to a radiator or a painted reveal in a dry room, and it does not breathe — a faux linen curtain across a sunny window traps heat against the glass rather than letting it move.
