Yarn-dyed vs printed stripe: the difference at a window A stripe on a curtain is either printed onto finished cloth or dyed into the yarn before weaving, and on a window the difference is not subtle. A printed stripe sits on one face only — so from outside your house the curtain is plain, and from inside the pattern slowly softens and blurs at the edges as the ink degrades in sunlight. Why yarn-dyed striped linen curtains hold their edges This is yarn-dyed. The warp threads are colored on the cone, then the cloth is woven from them, so the stripe is a structural fact of the fabric rather than a layer on top of it. It reads identically on both faces, it cannot fade unevenly because there is no surface ink to break down, and the edges stay razor-sharp for the life of the panel. Warp stripe: the correct direction on a curtain It also runs the right way. A warp stripe is vertical by construction, which is what you want on a curtain — a vertical line lengthens a window and draws the eye up, and every deep fold in the panel gives the stripe another rhythm as it turns through the light. A horizontal stripe on a curtain has to be woven in the weft and almost always looks like a mistake. Ticking is a 4 mm line on a 14 mm repeat — from across a room it reads as texture and behaves like a neutral. Awning is a 45 mm band, which is a graphic and becomes the loudest thing in the room. Pinstripe is a single 1.5 mm thread on a 20 mm ground, which reads as plain until you stand next to it.
