Full Size Quilt

Full size is the least respected size in bedding and the one that gets fudged most often. Retailers stock queen and king, list a full/queen combined size, and let the buyer discover that a 92-inch quilt on a 54-inch mattress puddles on the floor at both sides. That is not a fit, it is a shrug.

Cut 88 × 92 inches for the 54-inch full mattress: 17 inches of drop each side, clean at the foot, and enough length to fold back over pillows without the quilt running out. Full and double are the same bed under two names, so if your mattress measures 54 by 75 inches, this is your size regardless of what the label on it says.

This is a guest-room and spare-room size more often than a primary bed, and the specification is set with that in mind. Cotton throughout — 200 thread count combed long-staple cotton face, 200 gsm cotton batting, cotton back — because a quilt that sits folded in a cupboard for four months at a time needs to come out fresh rather than stale, and cotton airs where a synthetic fill holds the smell of the cupboard.

Quilted in a 1.5 in. diamond at eight stitches to the inch, bound in half-inch double-fold bias binding, garment-washed to under 3% residual shrinkage. Three pieces: quilt and two standard 20 × 26 in. shams.

The practical advice for a guest bed is to keep the quilt neutral and let the sheets carry the colour. Alabaster and Bone read as considered against any headboard; Fog Grey and Sable hide the marks a spare room accumulates between uses.

Cold wash, tumble low, and store it folded loosely rather than compressed in a vacuum bag — cotton batting does not recover its loft after months under compression.
