Why wool does three things at once at a window

Wool is a protein fiber with a natural three-dimensional crimp, and almost everything it does at a window follows from that single fact. The crimp holds the fibers apart, so a wool cloth is full of air pockets while remaining dense. Air pockets are what make a material insulate, absorb sound and hold moisture — so wool does all three at once, not as separate features but as one property described three ways.

Wool curtain fire behavior

The fire behavior is worth knowing properly because it is genuinely unusual. Wool has a high nitrogen and water content and a high ignition temperature, and it forms a char rather than melting. In practice it is difficult to ignite, it does not sustain a flame, and it self-extinguishes when the source is removed — which is why wool is the traditional fiber for theatre drapes, aircraft seating and the blanket kept by a fireplace. Synthetic curtains do the opposite: they melt, drip and carry flame. We are not making a formal fire-rating claim here, because that requires the finished make-up to be tested; we are describing the fiber.

Wool curtains as acoustic absorbers

Acoustically it is the best natural absorber available in a curtain. The crimped structure and the scale surface of the fiber convert sound energy far more efficiently than a smooth filament, which is why a wool panel does more per gram than the same weight of polyester velour.

Humidity buffering: 30% moisture without feeling damp

And it buffers humidity. Wool absorbs up to 30% of its own weight in moisture without feeling damp, and releases it as the room dries. Hung across a cold window in winter it takes up the condensation that would otherwise sit on the glass and run down the reveal.
