What room divider curtains solve, and where they go wrong

Dividing a room with cloth is the cheapest spatial change you can make to a building and the one most often botched. It is used to make a bedroom out of the end of a studio, to close off a home office, to screen a bed in an open-plan flat, to divide a shared children’s room, and to shut a draughty stairwell out of a living room. In all of those it works well, and in all of them the same two things go wrong.

The fixing: into joists, never plasterboard

The first is the fixing. A full-height panel weighs 6 to 10 kg and it is pulled sideways every time it is used, which is a load plasterboard fixings are not rated for in any form. The track must be screwed into ceiling joists, or into a timber batten spanning at least two joists and screwed into both. Find the joists first, plan the track to suit them, and if the joists run the wrong way, fit a batten. Every track here ships with a joist map template and 6 mm structural screws rather than the plasterboard plugs that come in the box with most systems.

Double-faced: both rooms see a finished curtain

The second is that both faces are visible. A divider is looked at from both sides, permanently, and an ordinary curtain has a lining side. These are made double-faced: two full-weight cloths bonded back to back, so each room sees a proper finished curtain rather than a lining. It doubles the material and it is not optional in this application.

Acoustic side-benefit of double-faced room divider curtains

The weight has a useful by-product. Two bonded cloths at 220 gsm each hung at 2.5× fullness is a genuinely effective acoustic absorber between the two spaces — not soundproofing, which no curtain does, but a real reduction in reverberation and in the intelligibility of speech across the divide. In a shared studio that is most of what people actually want.

Ceiling track in white, black or anodised aluminium, cut to length to 6 m with a bend available for an L-shaped division. Panels made to measure to 144 in. drop, in any two cloths from the range — the two faces can be different colours, one for each room.
