Why yarn-dyed matters more on plaid than any other pattern

Plaid is a pattern that lives or dies on how it is made. A yarn-dyed plaid is constructed at the loom from coloured threads, so the check is genuinely in the cloth and both faces are the same. A printed plaid is a photograph of a plaid pattern lasered onto a plain fabric, and the give-away is the reverse — always plain, and the fade of the print goes uneven within a season.

Three plaid patterns for three rooms

The traditional tartan (Blackwatch, Stewart, Nova Scotia) is the cabin cushion — heavy, wintry, right in a room with timber and stone. The small-check gingham is a lighter, year-round pattern that works in a cottage kitchen or a country bedroom. The buffalo check is the modern-farmhouse pattern — a bold 5 cm check in either Blackwatch or classic red-black.
