Why cotton is still the sensible fibre for throw pillows

Cotton throw pillows are the ones you actually use. Velvet looks better and is worse to wash. Linen looks more expensive and creases forever. Wool is warm and pills. Cotton washes at 40 °C without complaint, dries in a couple of hours, does not pill, does not build static and does not need dry-cleaning — which is why it is what hotels put on the beds in every room they own.

Two things matter on a cotton throw pillow, and both are boring: a decent weight (260 gsm rather than a thin sheeting cotton that lets the insert show through) and a real zip (YKK metal or nylon rather than the plastic version that splits after four wash cycles). Everything else is dressing.

Six sizes because throw pillows are not one thing

Bed styling (20 in. at the head, 18 in. in front, lumbar over both) is a different job from sofa styling (22 in. at the back corners, 20 in. inside, lumbar centre). Kids’ beds and accent chairs need 16 in. Sectionals need 24 in. One size does not do the whole house.
