Why matt faux leather beats real leather on a throw pillow

Real leather looks fantastic on a throw pillow for about a season, then the seams stretch and the surface gets pressure marks from being sat on. The problem is that real leather has grain but no give. Faux leather with a matte, textured finish reads as leather at any normal viewing distance and takes the sitting-on abuse without permanent creasing.

What we specify to keep faux leather looking honest

The failure mode of cheap faux leather is shine — a plastic sheen that no real leather ever has. Ours is specified matt, and given a subtle grain texture that catches light the way tanned leather does. The cotton reverse is deliberate: soft against a leather sofa, easier to change out for a wash.
