Cotton vs plastic shower curtain liners: a different principle

A cotton liner works on a completely different principle from a plastic one and it is important to understand which you are buying. Plastic is an impermeable barrier: water cannot pass through it, full stop. Cotton is a permeable cloth woven tightly enough that surface tension holds droplets on the outside long enough to run off — the same mechanism as a ventile jacket or a traditional canvas tent.

Where a cotton shower curtain liner works

That works, genuinely and well, under two conditions. The weave has to be dense enough — this is a 280 thread count organic cotton in a tight plain weave, not a loose muslin. And the cloth has to be able to dry between uses, which in a ventilated bathroom used once or twice a day it comfortably does.

Where it fails

It fails under sustained direct contact. Standing water against cotton will eventually wick through, so if your liner sits against the inside of a bath while the bath is full, or if a shower head sprays directly onto one spot of it for ten minutes, it will pass water. In a walk-in shower with the spray landing on the tray, it will not.

The advantage plastic cannot offer

What you get in exchange is the thing plastic cannot offer. It launders — properly, at 60 °C, with the towels, as often as you like — which means the soap film that mildew actually feeds on gets removed rather than accumulating. A plastic liner is wiped; a cotton one is washed. Over three years the cotton one stays cleaner, and it does not end up in landfill at the end of it.

How it hangs

It also hangs like cloth rather than like film. No static cling to the legs, no billowing inward, no crackle. For a lot of people that is the entire reason to switch and the water-resistance question is secondary.

100% GOTS-certified organic cotton, 280 thread count, with a mercerised finish that closes the weave further. Twelve rustproof grommets in a reinforced header, weighted hem. Undyed Bone and Alabaster only — a dyed liner in constant hot water eventually gives its colour to the curtain in front of it.
