Why shower curtains billow, explained by aerodynamics

The billow has a proper explanation and it is more interesting than it needs to be. A running shower drags air downward with the water and warms it, and the moving air inside the curtain is at slightly lower pressure than the still air outside it. The pressure difference pushes the curtain inward. It is the same effect that lifts an aircraft wing, working on a sheet of plastic, and it is why the curtain finds your leg with such reliability.

Distributed mass along the full hem is the fix

The fix is mass at the bottom edge, and specifically mass distributed along the whole hem rather than concentrated in a couple of spots. This liner carries a continuous chain of sewn weights in individually sealed pockets across the full width, so the hem has enough inertia to resist the pressure differential and enough distribution to stay flat rather than pulling into a V.

Magnets only work on a steel bath — stated plainly

Now the part that liner listings never say. Magnets only work on a steel bath. Magnetic hem weights are sold on almost every liner in the category and they cling to nothing at all on an acrylic, fibreglass, stone-resin or tiled shower tray — which is what the great majority of bathrooms fitted in the last thirty years actually have. If your bath is a modern acrylic one, the magnets on your current liner have never once done anything.

Check yours before you buy anything: put a fridge magnet on the inside of the bath. If it falls off, buy weight, not magnets.

Two free things that reduce shower curtain billow

Two other things reduce billow and cost nothing. Use a curved shower rod, which moves the whole curtain 4 to 6 in. further out at the middle. And run the shower slightly cooler — the effect is driven by the temperature difference across the curtain, so a scalding shower billows harder than a warm one.
