The smell is the story on conventional shower curtain liners

The smell is the story. Open a conventional vinyl shower liner and the sharp chemical odour that fills the bathroom is not a manufacturing residue that will wash off — it is the product doing what it does. PVC film is rigid on its own, so it is made flexible by adding plasticisers, and those plasticisers are not chemically bonded to the polymer. They migrate out over the life of the product, into the air of a small, warm, humid, poorly ventilated room. That process has a name: off-gassing. The smell is you detecting it.

Why phthalates moved this category

The plasticisers historically used for this are phthalates, and phthalates are the reason this category has moved. They are restricted in children’s products across most markets and they are on the EU candidate list of substances of very high concern. There is legitimate scientific argument about the exposure level from a shower curtain specifically, and we are not going to overstate it. What is not arguable is that you can simply avoid the question.

PEVA: a different polymer, not a treated version

This liner is PEVA — polyethylene vinyl acetate. It is a different polymer, not a treated version of the same one: no chlorine in the backbone, and no plasticiser required to make it flexible, because the polymer is flexible already. There is therefore nothing in it to migrate out and nothing to smell. Take it out of the packet and hold it to your face; there is no odour at all, which is the most direct test available to you.

The recycling advantage of a non-toxic shower curtain liner

It is also cleanly recyclable as a polyethylene, where PVC contaminates recycling streams and is generally landfilled or incinerated — and incinerating chlorinated plastic is its own problem.

8 gauge film, which is heavy for PEVA and the reason this hangs rather than clings. Twelve rustproof grommets in a reinforced double header, three sewn hem magnets and a weighted bottom seam. Frosted clear, so it passes light into the tub — a dark liner makes a small bathroom into a cupboard.
