Our lace bed skirt gathers at 2:1 rather than the heavier 2.5:1 used on plain ruffles, because lace has structure of its own that heavy gathering crushes.

Why our lace bed skirt uses lace only at the trim

The mistake in almost every lace bed skirt is making the whole panel from lace. Lace is by definition an open fabric, so a full-panel lace skirt shows you the bed base, the storage boxes and the dust behind it — which is a comprehensive failure of the one job a bed skirt has.

Why 12 cm is a deliberate trim depth on a lace bed skirt

Twelve centimetres is a deliberate figure. Narrower and the lace reads as a fussy afterthought at ankle height. Wider and it starts to show the floor through it and undo the point. At 12 cm it sits in the lower fifth of a 15 in. drop, which is the proportion that looks intentional.

Why 2:1 gather (not 2.5:1) on a lace bed skirt

The panel above the trim is gathered at 2:1 rather than the 2.5:1 used on our plain ruffled bed skirt. Lace has structure of its own and a heavy gather crushes the pattern; a lighter gather lets the scallop read. Two variables tuned for the material, not just applied from a standard playbook.

Colour choice — why Alabaster and Bone only

Available in Alabaster and Bone only, because a coloured lace trim on a coloured ground almost never matches convincingly after two washes. Two undyed tones are the reliable choice; coloured lace bedding is where a lot of ordering regret starts.

Measuring for a lace bed skirt

Measure floor to top of base. Choose 15 in. or 18 in. — whichever is closer without going under. The 12 cm trim proportion is calculated on the 15 in. drop; on the 18 in. it sits proportionally lower down the panel and still reads correctly.

How to care for your lace bed skirt

• Wash cool on a gentle cycle inside a mesh laundry bag
• Hang to dry — cotton lace is the one part of this range that dislikes a tumble dryer, where the scalloped edge catches and pulls
• Skip fabric softener — dulls the scalloped lace surface
• Iron warm on the reverse if a pressed finish is desired
