Why brown is a designer’s neutral, not a filler colour

Brown is the colour that has come back into rooms after twenty years of grey. Against timber, leather and brass it warms a scheme without the shouting a coloured cushion does; against cream or white it grounds the pale scheme it sits in. The reason brown throw pillows disappeared for a while — and are back — is scheme fatigue, not brown.

Four browns that behave differently in a room

Sable is the warm mid-brown, the versatile one. Tan is the lighter, warmer shade — the sunned-leather brown. Chocolate is the deepest brown, the anchor on a Bone sofa. Taupe is the grey-brown — the one that sits with cool schemes as well as warm.
