Why half of modern beds cannot fit a conventional bed skirt

Roughly half of the beds sold in the last decade have no box spring. Platform beds, slatted frames, storage bases and most upholstered beds put the mattress straight onto a solid or slatted deck — which means the fabric platform in a conventional bed skirt has nowhere to go. You cannot fit one. It is not a matter of trying harder. A velcro bed skirt is one of only two answers (the other is wrap-around).

How the velcro bed skirt attaches

A 1.5 in. hook-and-loop strip is sewn along the top edge of the velcro bed skirt; the matching self-adhesive loop strip supplied in the box is pressed onto the side rail of the frame. The skirt then presses on, pulls off, and goes straight in the machine — no lifting anything, ever.

Two details make the difference between this working and this being a gimmick. First, the adhesive strip is a high-tack acrylic rated for sealed timber, painted timber, MDF and upholstered rails — it is not a household double-sided tape, which lets go in a warm room within a fortnight. Second, the hook strip is sewn along the entire length rather than in patches, so the top edge holds a straight line instead of scalloping between fixings.

Forgiving on measurement — the practical advantage

The velcro bed skirt is the most forgiving cut if you are not certain of your measurement, because the strip can be positioned anywhere on the rail. Fix it high and the skirt just clears the floor; fix it lower to shorten the drop. Standard drops are 15 in. and 18 in. and either will suit most platform beds once positioned.

Installing the velcro bed skirt correctly

Clean and dry the rail before applying the adhesive strip, and give it twelve hours before hanging the skirt. On a waxed or oiled timber rail, use the wrap-around fitting instead — nothing adhesive holds reliably on an oiled surface.
