Why hemp was the fiber for sails and hawsers

Before synthetic rope, every sail and every hawser on every ship was hemp, and the reason was not availability. It was that hemp survives salt water and constant wetting better than any other plant fiber — cotton rots, flax weakens, hemp keeps most of its strength. A shower is a small, warm, permanently damp environment, which makes it the same brief at a domestic scale.

Two fiber properties that make hemp shower curtain liners work

Two things in the fiber do it. Hemp has an unusually high silica content, which makes the surface inhospitable to the fungi and bacteria that colonize damp cellulose, and it retains a high proportion of lignin — the rigid polymer that stiffens a plant stem — which resists microbial breakdown in a way that pure cellulose does not. Neither is a finish. Neither washes off. It is the fiber.

It also gains strength when wet rather than losing it, which is unusual and is why it holds its shape hanging in a shower instead of stretching and sagging along the grommet line over a year.

Water-resistant, not waterproof

Set the expectation correctly, because it is the same as the cotton liner: this is water-resistant, not waterproof. A dense hemp weave sheds spray by surface tension and dries very fast. Under a jet held directly against it for several minutes it will eventually pass water. In a normal shower it does not.

There is a break-in period worth knowing about. New hemp is stiff and feels almost like canvas. It softens substantially over the first five or six washes and reaches its final hand after about ten — and unlike cotton, it keeps softening for years rather than wearing out.
