Why pleating benefits a sheer more than a heavy cloth

A sheer benefits from a pleated heading more than a heavy cloth does, because a light fabric has no weight of its own to organise its folds. Left on a rod pocket, a voile gathers randomly, sags in the middle of a long run and shows every irregularity. Pleated, it falls in a regular controlled wave and looks deliberate.

The opaque-buckram problem on sheer curtains

But pleating a transparent cloth introduces a problem heavier fabrics never have. Every pleated heading is built on a stiffener — a buckram band, usually 4 in. deep, that gives the pleat something to stand on. Standard buckram is a dense opaque interlining. Put it behind a voile and you have created a solid horizontal bar across the top of a translucent panel, visible from inside as a shadow and from the street as a stripe.

The translucent buckram fix

The fix is a translucent buckram: an open-mesh stiffener at roughly the same openness as the cloth it sits behind, so the header transmits light at close to the same rate as the rest of the panel. It costs more, it is fiddlier to work, and it is the reason a properly made pleated sheer looks like one continuous piece of light and a cheap one looks like a curtain with a lintel.

2.5× fullness is not decorative on sheer curtains

On a sheer that fullness is not decorative — a translucent cloth at 2× looks stretched and shows the ground; at 2.5× the overlapping folds build up density where they meet and the panel reads as substantial despite weighing almost nothing.
