Why 84 inch blackout curtains are the default size

Eighty-four inches is the standard because a standard ceiling is 96 in. and a curtain rod mounted a few inches above a standard window lands almost exactly 84 in. from the floor. That is the whole reason the size exists. It also means the length only works if the rod goes where the arithmetic says.

Do the sum before you order

Do the sum before you order. Measure from the floor to where the rod will sit, then subtract about half an inch if you want the hem to float clear of the floor, or add an inch if you want it to break slightly against it. On a grommet heading, remember the panel hangs from the top of the grommet, roughly an inch below the rod. If the answer is not close to 84, you want a different length — and the two most common answers are 96 in. for a rod mounted at picture-rail height and 108 in. for a ceiling-mounted track.

Don’t mount low to make 84 inch fit

The temptation is to mount low so 84 in. fits. Resist it. A rod mounted just above the window frame makes the window look smaller, makes the ceiling look lower, and on a blackout curtain it wastes the one trick that most improves light control — hanging high so the light coming over the top lands on wall rather than in the room.
