Why the bedroom door needs blackout too

People spend a great deal of effort on the window and then leave the door alone, which is why so many carefully blacked-out bedrooms are still not dark. A landing light under a bedroom door throws a bright band across the floor and up the far wall, and in a nursery it is frequently the actual reason a child will not settle.

How the portière rod works on a blackout door curtain

A door curtain — a portière, historically — hangs on the door itself rather than on the frame, so it moves with the door and never needs to be drawn. It is fitted on a hinged portière rod screwed to the door face at the top: the rod swings with the door and the panel stays flat against it whether the door is open or shut.

The chain-weighted hem is the seal

The cloth is 3-pass acrylic-foam coated at 290 gsm, under 0.5% light transmission, and the hem is the important part. It is 3 in. double-turned with a continuous sewn chain weight and cut so the panel just brushes the floor — heavy enough to stay in contact as the door swings, and to fall straight back into place after. That contact is what closes the gap; a panel hanging an inch clear of the floor does nothing at all.

Two problems solved with one product

It works twice over, because the same seal that stops light stops moving air. A door curtain on an external door, a hallway door or a door to an unheated stair is a genuinely effective draught excluder, and it is why these were standard in every house before central heating and are quietly coming back.

Sizes, rod finishes, colours

Standard sizes fit 30, 32 and 36 in. doors at a 78 in. drop, and 80 in. for a taller door. Portière rod included, in Ink, Antique Brass or Brushed Nickel. Colours: Alabaster, Bone, Fog Grey, Sable, Ink, Clay and Indigo.

Fitting notes and care

Check the door swing before you order: a portière needs about an inch of clearance at the hinge side, and on a door that opens against a wall the rod must be fitted on the pull side. Machine wash cold and hang to dry.
