Why a skylight blackout curtain cannot work

It is worth saying this plainly, because a great many people search for skylight curtains and are sold something that cannot work. A curtain relies on gravity to hold it flat against a vertical opening. A skylight is horizontal or steeply raked, so gravity pulls the fabric away from the glass rather than against it. Any curtain fitted to a roof window sags into the room within days and lets a bright gap open all the way round.

What actually works on a skylight: a blind in side channels

The mechanism that does work is a blind running in channels. Two slim aluminium U-profiles are screwed to the sides of the reveal, and the blind’s edges run inside them, held flat against the glass regardless of the angle. There is no gap at the sides because the fabric is inside the channel rather than beside it, and a top cassette closes the head. The result is the darkest fitting in this entire range — genuinely darker than any curtain, because a skylight reveal is a sealed box once the channels are in.
