Our white blackout curtains use the only construction that genuinely makes white blackout: a black layer sandwiched between two white ones.

Why so many white blackout curtains disappoint

There is a reason so many white blackout curtains disappoint. A pale fabric reflects and scatters light rather than absorbing it, so a white cloth thick enough to look substantial can still glow like a lampshade when the sun is directly behind it. Hold most white blackout panels up to a window at noon and you will see the frame through them.

The only construction that makes white blackout curtains genuinely dark

The only construction that solves it is a hidden black layer. Our white panels are 3-pass acrylic-foam coated: a white face, a black middle pass, and a white or ivory back. The black core absorbs what the white surfaces would otherwise scatter, and the outer white layer means you never see it — from inside the room and from the street the curtain is simply white. Measured light transmission through the cloth is under 0.5% by spectrophotometer at 550 nm, the same as our darkest colors.

Why we do not sell 2-pass white blackout curtains

This is also why we do not sell a 2-pass white. A 2-pass coating is white foam on a white ground with no black layer, and in white it is barely better than a lined curtain. It is the single most common thing sold as white blackout and it is the reason people conclude that white blackout does not exist.

The trade with white blackout curtains: dirt, not light

The trade you do make with white is dirt rather than light. A pale curtain in a window shows dust along the leading edge and at the hem within a season. Both wash out — cold wash, hang to dry, never tumble a coated panel — and the coating is colorfast to lightfast grade 6, so repeated sunlight will not yellow the face.

Two whites, and sizes

Available in Alabaster, a true cool white, and Bone, a warm ivory that sits better against timber and against warm-white lighting. Lengths 63, 84, 96, 108 and 120 in., 52 in. per panel, grommet or rod pocket heading.

Alternative: linen face over a separate blackout liner

For a white curtain that is not blackout but reads as one from inside, a white linen face over a separate blackout liner gives softer light at the edges and a much better drape.
