Why print-first, coat-after works and print-on-coating doesn’t

Printing and blackout fight each other, and how a manufacturer resolves that fight tells you what you are buying. A blackout coating is an acrylic foam surface that will not hold ink properly; print onto it and the pattern sits soft, bleeds at the edges and lifts within a couple of years of sunlight.

Printed blackout curtains done the right way round

These are made the other way round. The polyester face is disperse-printed first, at which point the ink is heat-set into the fibre rather than sitting on it, and the 3-pass coating is applied to the back afterwards. The result is a print with sharp edges and full saturation, and a back that measures under 0.5% light transmission — neither compromised for the other.

Colourfast at ISO 105-B02 grade 6

It also means the pattern is genuinely colourfast in a window, which is where printed curtains normally fail. Disperse printing bonds at the fibre level, so the panel is rated ISO 105-B02 grade 6 for light-fastness: two grades above the usual soft-furnishing benchmark and the difference between a print that survives ten summers on a south-facing window and one with a pale band across it after two.

Five patterns, repeat stated

Patterns and repeats are stated rather than left to the photograph. Ditsy Floral at a 14 cm repeat, Wide Stripe at 10 cm bands, Fine Stripe at 3 cm, Gingham at 2 cm check, and Plaid at a 24 cm repeat. Panels within a pair are cut from the same run and matched at the leading edge, so the pattern lines up where the two curtains meet.

Scale is the whole decision

Scale is the decision that matters. A small repeat reads as texture from across the room and behaves almost like a solid; a 24 cm plaid becomes the loudest thing in the room and asks everything else to stay quiet. In a bedroom, where the curtain is the largest coloured surface after the walls, that difference decides whether you still like it in a year.

Lengths 63, 84, 96 and 108 in., 52 in. per panel, grommet or rod pocket. Machine wash cold inside out, hang to dry, and keep the coated back out of direct sun while drying.
